The Story of Tristan and Isolde

For those who like love stories , as it does only exist in fairy tales and legends , here is one of the best :

Tristan1[1]

Our story takes place a long time ago in the Kingdom of Ireland. At this time there are many conflicts between the English Lords, who are under the threat ( the menace ) of tyrannical King Donnachdh . Some of them are too afraid to confront him and wish to join his army , even if they must abandon their status of free men . But some more adventurous , prefer to die than having to kneel ( on knees ) before this crazy crowned ( the one with a crown on his head is King ) . The highly respected Lord Marke is one of those rare men to fight for their integrity. One night, all the English Lords are gathering in the greatest secrecy : Lord Marke offers them to form an alliance between all the Lords of the country and to opose the King's authority . But things do not go as planned ... apparently traitor ( the one who betrays ) informed the Sovereign of their project and an army takes men by surprise. Among the many lords killed that night there was the father of a boy aged of just ten years old : Tristan . Orphan now , Lord Marke is a good man, and takes him under his wing. The boy grew up with an adoptive father , who loves him even more than his other first son : Melot . Tristan has an incredible strength ( synonym for force ) and skill ( synonym of aptitude and ability ) that make him an unbeatable soldier. In addition to being a formidable opponent ( adversary ), the young man is also of an undeniable beauty, like an angel.  Although ( even though ) he is very popular with young women , Tristan is not much attracted by the ladies and prefers loneliness ( solitude ) to their company . Love is a stranger in his soul. Many believe that to witness ( to see ) the death of his both parents, his heart turned to a stone. During a battle against a gigantic warrior, Tristan finally succumbed to a small cut with a poisoned sword. Lord Marke is afflicted with grief ( sorrow ), the one that he loved more than anyone else is dead. Tristan receives a funeral worthy ( as prestigious ) of a prince and goes to join the other world. As required by the English rites , the deceased ( dead person ) is placed on a boat.

On the other side of the sea, the young and beautiful Isolde mourns ( crying for someone's death ) the death of his mother. She secretly hates his father King Donnachdh , that she suspected of being the responsible of this tragedy . When he comes to announce that she will marry the most rude soldiers of the Irish army, she can not protest because it would be too dangerous to confront the devastating fury ( anger ) of his father. She hold back ( restrain )her grief and immersed in her readings . But one day, when she was walking on the beach , she saw a boat's wreck ( ruined ) and over a half-dead man . Expert in plants , she quickly realizes that what made him dying is poison. Cautious ( careful ), she houses the young man in a remote ( distant ) corner of the coast, where no one may come to harm ( injure or damage ) him . Guessing that he is an Englishman , she takes some precautions : she regularly visits and treats ( attempt to cure ) him. When Tristan recovered from his injury and he sees Isolde for the first time , he immediately falls in love for her mesmerizing ( hypnotic ) grace and kindness.

She also gradually falls in love with the young survivor but knows that he should not stay here too long . Tristan must leave at high speed , back across the sea to join his family; because in Ireland he is not in safety. Isolde had hidden her true identity so that he does not doubt of her good intentions , her ignores that she is in fact the only daughter of his worst enemy. As the young woman refuses to leave with him, he promises to himself to return in Ireland and to find her. When he finally reached ( to get to ) his village , a large feast ( party ) is organized : Lord Marke has never been so happy ! But the soul of Tristan seems absent, because he only thinks of his tender love , the beautiful golden-haired .

When he hears mentioned a battle between the English and Irish soldiers , Tristan did not hesitate a second and offers Marke that he allows him to fight in his name in order to win the reward promised to the winner of the tournament : The hand of the daughter of the King of Ireland. Lord Marke, who did not take a wife for many years now, agrees and hope that this union will make peace between the two peoples enemies. Tristan therefore ( as a consequence )went back to Ireland , and hopes that he will meet the woman who saved him. As expected, the young man wins the tournament ( game, fight or competition ) but his happiness is quickly replaced by horror when he discovers that the daughter of King Donnachdh is none other than the one he loves and whom ( à qui ) he has married to his adoptive father : The Lord Marke .

If you are interested in this story I suggest you to see the movie : Tristan and Isolde released ( sorti ) in 2006 and which,  in my opinion, is very moving ( emotionally touching ) !

Short Introduction

First of all I want to say that the idea of this blog was given to me by Mandouillette Sabatin further to a conversation where we talked about how to learn more English vocabulary. I am also inspired by my English teacher, who has got her own blog. Unlike The Clack's, each of us can visit this website at any moment. Anyway, there are all the same few rules to respect : Soon, you will  be able to post topics and possibly correct errors that you would noticed, but it is strictly forbidden to modify the content of what the others have written. Secondly, we must not forget that this blog is both fun and educational, so the goal is always to learn NEW vocabulary, try to use a diversify lexique and elevated language, or at least synonyms of too common words. Personally I would do the same and explain the meaning of each intricate ( complex, difficult, complicated ) words, in brackets ( parenthesis in US ). Last thing : you can change the decoration of our blog  ( as long as it is not too provocative, remember that this blog can be seen by anyone ). If you need an online dictionary, please take this one : wordreference.com, it is the one that teachers recommand.

Now it's time to have fun girls !
